Let’s face it, powder coating is everywhere – from garden gates to aircraft components. But have you ever looked at a famous landmark and thought “That would look fantastic in RAL 3020 Traffic Red”?
No? Just us?
Well, welcome to the strange and colourful thought experiment we didn’t know we needed…
What if the world’s most iconic landmarks were powder coated?
Buckle up. This is what happens when technical know-how meets imagination (and a very large curing oven).
Currently a stately shade of “Eiffel Tower Brown” (yes, that’s real), the Iron Lady might benefit from a refresh. Imagine her in a fine-textured anthracite grey – a sleek, modern matte finish that resists fingerprints and weathering. Paris chic, but industrially practical.
Or perhaps we’ve been playing it far too safe. What about RAL 6018 Yellow Green? Suddenly the Eiffel Tower has gone from iconic Parisian landmark to enormous lime-green garden ornament. We can’t decide whether it’s genius or a crime against architecture.
Bonus thought, with powder coating’s anti-corrosion properties Gustave Eiffel would be thrilled due to less repainting every seven years.
She’s green because of oxidation, but what if Lady Liberty was intentionally mint? A UV-resistant, satin-finish powder coat could preserve that seafoam tone forever – without relying on nature’s slow chemistry.
Or better yet, restore her to her original copper glow, sealed in a clear powder coating to maintain that shine against New York’s salty air.
The Taj Mahal is iconic for its white marble, but powder coating offers the chance to have that look without the upkeep. A super-durable matte white finish, with subtle stone-textured flecks, could mimic the marble – minus the years of cleaning and restoration.
But we’re daydreaming here, so why not powder coat the domes in metallic gold with pearlescent clear coat? Royalty meets rust protection.
Imagine the weathered stone of Edinburgh Castle clad in a dark, rugged charcoal texture powder coat that enhances its fortress feel while resisting graffiti and grime. You could even use thermal-resistant coatings for the cannon areas. (It’s called planning ahead.)
Sure, it would confuse the tourists – but the durability would be unbeatable.
These ancient guardians have withstood centuries of weather, but why not help them out with a bronze-effect powder coat? It would preserve the carved details and introduce a tactile sandblasted texture. Functional and fabulous.
Imagine the famous white ‘Hollywood’ letters transformed into a dazzling chrome-effect powder-coated finish. Every sunrise and sunset would turn the hillside into a giant reflection of Los Angeles.
Would it be practical? Probably not. Would it be subtle? Absolutely not. Would it look spectacular? We think you know the answer.
While powder coating can’t necessarily replicate the exact mirror finish of traditional chrome plating, specialist metallic powders can create some seriously bright, reflective finishes – proving that powder coating isn’t restricted to matt blacks and industrial greys.
And of course, we’d give the Hollywood sign a suitably durable exterior-grade coating because even Hollywood needs to survive the elements.
Big Ben is already one of London’s most recognisable landmarks but what if someone decided that what it really needed was a gold metallic powder-coated finish?
Suddenly, the London skyline has gone from Victorian grandeur to something that looks like it’s sponsored by a very wealthy football club.
A metallic gold finish could give the famous clock tower a completely different personality – while still demonstrating one of powder coating’s biggest advantages: the sheer variety of colours, textures and finishes available.
Okay, so this is all hypothetical and we’re not suggesting UNESCO sites be powder blasted anytime soon, but the reasons behind the idea are actually grounded:
From steel beams to sculpture, powder coating offers the kind of performance even ancient architects would have admired – if they had access to a curing oven.
While we may never see Big Ben in candy apple red, this thought experiment reminds us that a finish is more than skin-deep. Whether you’re coating a fence or fabricating future landmarks, the right surface protection makes all the difference.
