Is Green the new Black? Sustainable powder coating trends in 2025

The world is going green – literally and figuratively. From consumer electronics to high-rise facades, sustainability is no longer just a buzzword. It’s a requirement. And in the world of powder coating, “eco-friendly” doesn’t mean compromising on quality or performance. In fact, it’s quite the opposite.

So, is green really the new black in 2025’s powder coating world? Let’s take a look at the sustainability trends shaking up the industry and why they matter more than ever….

1. The powder coating advantage (yes, it’s already greener!)

Before we get into what’s changing, let’s acknowledge what’s already working. Powder coating has long been considered a more environmentally responsible option compared to wet paint. This is why:

  • No solvents (zero VOCs).
  • Less waste – overspray can often be recycled.
  • A durable finish equals a longer lifespan.
  • Lower fire risk due to no flammable solvents.

It’s not perfect, but powder coating already has a head start in the sustainability race.

2. Low-temperature cure powders are heating up

Traditional powder coatings often require high temperatures to cure – around 180-200°C. That’s a lot of energy.

Now, manufacturers are developing low-temperature cure powders that perform just as well but cure at a much lower temperature of 130-150°C. What’s great about this is it:

  • Lowers energy usage (and therefore your carbon footprint).
  • Enables coating on heat-sensitive substrates (like certain plastics or composites).
  • Speeds up production and reduces oven wear.

For businesses looking to reduce both energy bills and emissions, this can be a game-changer. As we’ve mentioned energy bills, Tomburn has in recent years invested in solar energy to help reduce the company’s reliance on traditional energy sources – with half of the roof of the business premises now covered in high-efficiency solar panels. 3. Bio-based & recyclable formulations

R&D is pushing towards bio-derived resins and recyclable powder coatings. While still emerging, these innovations aim to replace petroleum-based ingredients with natural alternatives like:

  • Soy-based polyesters.
  • Recycled post-consumer materials.
  • Hybrid organic-inorganic coatings with reduced chemical impact.

They’re not yet mainstream, but at Tomburn we think they signal a big shift in how powder coatings will be formulated in the coming decade.

4. Energy-efficient curing technologies

Beyond the powder itself, infrared (IR) curing and UV-curable powders are on the rise. These technologies:

  • Use less energy compared to convection ovens.
  • Allow ultra-fast curing (sometimes within seconds).
  • Offer precise control for thin films and delicate parts.

While UV powders aren’t suitable for every application (yet), they offer a glimpse into a faster, cleaner future.

5. Smarter, greener pre-treatment

It’s not all about the coating – surface prep has a big impact on sustainability too.

Companies are switching from traditional phosphate systems which can produce sludge or require neutralisation to:

  • Zirconium-based pre-treatments.
  • Silane-based coatings.
  • Chrome-free alternatives.

These options reduce waste, use less water and are often safer for operators. During the second half of 2024 Tomburn completed a switch to chrome-free pre-treatment processes. You can read more about this here.

6. Eco-conscious clients are demanding change

One of the biggest drivers of green innovation? Customers.

Architects, OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) and end-users are increasingly asking for:

  • EPDs (Environmental Product Declarations).
  • LEED-compliant finishes (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design green building rating system).
  • Locally sourced or low-emission coatings.

These make sustainability a competitive edge – and powder coaters who can demonstrate lower environmental impact will stand out.

So, is Green the new Black?

Yes…and no.

“Green” doesn’t replace performance, durability or aesthetic value – it enhances them. The powder coating industry in 2025 is proving that sustainability and strength can coexist.

Whether it’s through smarter formulations, energy-efficient curing or cleaner pre-treatment, the message is clear. Going green isn’t a trend – it’s the future.

At Tomburn, we’re well-positioned to meet the growing demand for environmentally friendly powder coating services so if you’re looking for sustainable powder coating solutions please get in touch. We’re here to help you future-proof your finish!
