What causes orange peel in powder coating?

When the surface of a powder coated product lacks a smooth, even appearance once the coating has been applied, the effect is known as 'orange peel'. The 'orange peel' effect can vastly compromise the appeal of the product. Read on to find out more about this effect and how to prevent it.

How can 'orange peel' be avoided?

'Orange peel' can occur when the surface has not been prepared properly before the coating is added. The way that coating is applied can also be a cause, as can the way it is cured after application. Surfaces can be prepared for powder coating with sandblasting or immersion in zinc or phosphate. Sandblasting can make the part more durable, but there can be problems with indentation when you opt for this method. If surface indentations are too deep, sandblasting can cause the 'orange peel' effect. You may be able to avoid this by sanding the sandblasted surface with the fine sandpaper. Another step you can take is to apply a powder coating powder primer before adding your final coat of powder.

Stick to the guidelines

If more powder coating is added than necessary, this can also cause 'orange peel'. The effect can also occur when you fail to add enough. Powder combing is one way to measure the thickness of the powder effectively. It's essential to comply with the recommended cure schedule when you are curing the powder coating. If you attempt to cure the coating faster than recommended or are unable to heat the powder to the right temperature, you could be met with the orange peel effect. By sticking to the recommended cure schedule, you enable the powder to flow out correctly and link together, giving you a smooth finish. Infrared thermometers can be used to make sure the oven is set to the right temperature. When the heat is too high or too low, the flowing of the coating can be affected, leaving you with orange peel.

Prepare surfaces effectively

The aim of powder coating is to achieve a smooth appearance. This is why it is so important to prepare the surface correctly, avoiding an overly shallow or deep profile. Make sure the right amount of powder has been applied and that the curing process has been a success. Powder coating has grown in popularity over recent years for many reasons. Powder coating products are highly regarded for their durable finishes, smooth appearance, and long lives. This process is also environmentally-friendly and offers a harder finish than wet paint
